POWEO positive energy serving our customers

Electricity and gas

Present throughout France thanks to its regional agencies and its partners network, POWEO has demonstrated that it is a credible and effective alternative competing against the historical utilities in the business market. A different kind of utility that is close to its customers, attentive to their needs and offers innovative solutions specific to each set of problems. POWEO is the leading independent French operator with more than 88,000 professionals, businesses and communities that are already customers. The company holds a 30% market share among customers that have chosen an alternative electricity supplier (1). Accredited by the Minister of the Economy, Finance and Industry pour exercer son activité de energy supplier, POWEO is also registered with the Energy Regulation Commission (Commission de Régulation de l’Energie, CRE) and has signed a contract with the Electricity Transport Network (Réseau de Transport d’Electricité, RTE) and the Distribution Network Management Agency (Gestionnaire de Réseau de Distribution, GRD).

POWEO, an integrated operator

Over the past few years, the investment in France in new production equipment has been insufficient to keep pace with the continuing increase in consumption. In the medium-term, France’s energy independence is at stake. RTE (France’s Electricity Transmission Network) estimates the new capacity needed by the autumn of 2009 at 800 MW. Therefore POWEO has implemented an ambitious industrial plan to construct additional power-generating capacity, by establishing an alliance with VERBUND, the national Austrian operator and one of Europe’s leading hydroelectric producers.

While remaining independent, this strategic alliance allows the company to realise its ambition of becoming more than a simple supplier. Consequently, POWEO consolidates its position as the leading independent operator in the new market context, and gives itself the means to develop more competitive offers and services, while placing sustainable development and responsible consumption at the heart of its action

A bold industrial plan

POWEO’s first power station will commence operations in January 2009.With a capacity of 412 MW, it is located in Pont-sur-Sambre (North). POWEO is also continuing to develop several other thermal power plants in France, whose sites have already been secured.

Its pledge to respect the customer and the environment has prompted POWEO to diversify its sources and invest in renewable energies in the interest of sustainable development. The long-term objective is to have renewable energy sources providing 20% of the power-generating capacity. In 2006, POWEO launched its first investments in windfarms (the 24,5% owned Saint-Aubin farm and the 100% owned Boulay farm). The operator intends to strengthen its presence in this sector with, among other things, development projects in hydro power, photovoltaic solar power and biomass power.

Regarding natural gas, POWEO has established a supply policy based on signing long-term contracts as well as investing in strategic infrastructures. 17 November 2006 marked the Port of Le Havre Authority’s formal decision to retain POWEO and C.I.M. (Compagnie Industrielle Maritime) to conduct preliminary studies on the construction and operation of a liquefied gas terminal in the Antifer Port complex. Consequently, Gas de Normandie SAS (1) was created, held 66.66% by POWEO and 33.34% by C.I.M. This project (in the preliminary study phase) will be able to receive the largest “QatarMax” liquid gas tankers with a capacity of 270,000 m3 (130,000 tonnes) and 7 million tonnes of LNG (2) per year (3). It will generate several dozen permanent jobs and will thereby help diversify France’s natural gas sources of supply.

Consquently POWEO innovates daily to give you more and more transparency, simplicity and equity in energy accessibility
